Schuricht, Furtwangler & the OSR
[edit]I am not able to find specific references about the guest-conducting activity of Carl Schuricht and Wilhelm Furtwangler with the OSR, in the published literature. That paragraph about German conductors and Switzerland doesn't really seem germane to the OSR page in any case. I'm inclined to delete it, but have left it in for now. Thoughts? Thanks, DJRafe (talk) 21:23, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- A thought: The phrasing of the paragraph suggests that Furtwängler and Schuricht conducted the orchestra during WWII. However, Furtwängler only fled to Switzerland in January 1945, Schuricht at the end of 1944. --Francesco Malipiero (talk) 00:34, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
This may help for Schuricht.
- According to the CHARM database he recorded Beethoven’s 2nd symphony there in February 1947.
- Cascavelle CD VEL3133 has live OSR recordings of Bach and Brahms with him from the 1950s.
- From ‘Great Concert Artists’ series : Carl Schuricht, 1956. “…in 1944 he left his native land for political reasons and settled in Switzerland where he was welcomed with opened arms, notably by his great colleague Ernest Ansermet. He conducted in all the chief towns…”. Cg2p0B0u8m (talk) 22:12, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
- Many thanks to both of you for your responses. I decided to take out the Furtwangler and Schuricht text. I put in some more relevant text as "filler". DJRafe (talk) 00:26, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
Removal of 'Selected discography' section
[edit]The prior 'Selected discography' section featured no OSR recordings at all conducted by Ernest Ansermet. Given that Ansermet made 300+ recordings over several decades with the OSR, any discography that omits mention of Ansermet is, by definition, a nonsensical absurdity. Whilst other conductors like Janowski, Järvi, Jordan, etc have made recordings (no doubt fine ones) with the OSR, there is no point in having a discography that omits the single largest contributor as a conductor to the OSR discography. Under these circumstances, it is best not to have an OSR discography at all on the orchestra's Wikipedia page, because any such discography that attempted to be complete would overwhelm the length of the article.
